Welcome back DIMES!! You have stumbled across this post because you wanna know the magical ways of cleaning your makeup brushes.

Well, look no further babes because you have come to the right place!!

So, not only is my method super-duper easy (& nearly free), BUT it’s also low-key kinda fun!

Okay, so maybe it’s only fun for people like me who love to clean…. BUT above all, cleaning your makeup brushes is a MUST-DO! Try to incorporate this into your beauty routine every week if you can. Your skin will thank you for using clean brushes because you’ll be preventing bacteria buildup on the brushes, which can cause breakouts or other serious skin issues.

For a while, I, too, was captivated by influence/pulled into the trap set by beauty companies to spend (at least) $30 on a brush cleaning product. But if you’re anything like me, you’re broke… lol

Having just about $5.00 in my checking account kinda forced me into getting creative and cutting down on extraneous purchases such as $30 brush cleaner. In my Beauty Routine Essentials – 3 You Must Be Doing blog post I mentioned that I make my own brush cleaner, so here it is:

DIY Makeup Brush Cleaner:

It really is that simple ladies and gents (if you’re out there).

Now, let’s get this party started. First off, here is a list of everything you will need to clean your makeup brushes at home:

WHAT YOU NEED:

BY THE WAY, I don’t usually clean every single one of my brushes at once because they take a bit of time to dry and I usually still need to do my makeup.

So, step by step this is the method to my madness:

STEPS TO CLEAN YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES:

1. Prep – grab all your dirty makeup brushes and pile them on one side of the sink, then grab a hand towel and lay it on the other side.

2. Make the brush cleaner – mix together 2 parts dish soap & 1 part olive oil in a small bowl.

3. Run a brush under warm water to dampen it.

4. Dip the brush into your mixture.

5. Gently rub the brush around on your hand until the brush seems to be clean (trust me you can tell).

6. Repeat steps 4 & 5 if necessary.

7. Rinse the brush in warm water again.

8. Squeeze out as much water as possible with the towel you prepared in step 1 (this will speed up the drying process).

9. Adjust the wet bristles back to their original shape.

10. Lay the brushes to dry on the counter so that just the bristles are hanging off the edge, (to ensure that they maintain their shape) and now all you have to do is wait a few hours!

A FEW KEY THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:

  • When you are rinsing out the soap, MAKE SURE ALL THE SOAP IS OUT OF THE BRUSH! This is important because if you lay them to dry when there is still soap in the bristles you will end up with a crunchy brush and no one likes that.
  • Don’t lay your brushes on a towel to dry because they could get all mildewy and nasty.
  • Be careful not to get water and soap too far down the brush because the glue that keeps the handle and bristles together could loosen up and that would be a bummer. (unfortunately, I learned this by experience…RIP to those poor makeup brushes)

YAY now you have nice and clean brushes that won’t infect your face 🙂

I know that sounds gross, but it’s a real thing.

I hope this step-by-step guide to cleaning your makeup brushes with a simple DIY brush cleaner was helpful!

Much love DIMES,
